Designing with Light

Designing with Light

From the Studio

Light is one of the most important materials in architecture. It changes constantly, reveals texture, defines volume, and influences how people experience a place.

The position of a building, the depth of its openings, and the relationship between solid and void all influence the way light moves through a space. Morning light can establish a very different character from the softer light of late afternoon, while changes in season alter both intensity and duration. These shifts can become part of the experience rather than something that needs to be controlled away.

Rather than treating light as something added after the form is established, we consider it from the beginning. Orientation, proportion, material, and landscape are developed together so that daylight becomes part of the architecture itself. A deep reveal can create shadow and relief, while a carefully positioned opening can frame a tree, a wall, or a distant view.

The result is a building that changes subtly throughout the day and across the seasons. Rooms gain different qualities at different hours, materials reveal their texture gradually, and spaces feel connected to the conditions outside them. For us, designing with light is ultimately about designing for time, atmosphere, and experience.
